Urgent dental care

Not every dental emergency looks the same.

Some dental problems begin with pain. Others involve a broken tooth, swelling, a lost restoration or a sudden change that simply doesn't feel right.

If you're unsure whether the problem needs prompt attention, call us. Tell us what happened and what you're experiencing, and we'll help determine the appropriate next step.

You don't need to diagnose the problem before you call.

What to do

If you're not sure, call.

  • Tell us what happened

Let us know where the problem is, what you’re feeling and when it started.

  • We'll help assess the urgency

Based on what you tell us, we'll help determine whether you should be seen promptly and what you should do next.

  • We'll accommodate you as soon as we reasonably can

We make room in our schedule for urgent dental problems.

Seeking urgent medical care

Some symptoms need more than a dental appointment.

Dental infections and facial injuries can occasionally become medically urgent.

Patients should seek urgent medical assessment rather than waiting for a routine dental appointment if they are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Rapidly increasing or extensive facial or neck swelling.
  • Significant facial trauma or uncontrolled bleeding.
  • Other symptoms suggesting a medical emergency.

If you believe you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or seek emergency medical care.

Your visit

First, we figure out what's happening.

The immediate goal of an emergency dental visit is to assess the problem, understand the likely cause and determine what needs to happen next.

Assess

We'll examine the area and gather the information needed to understand the problem.

Explain

We'll tell you what we find and discuss the available options.

Plan

Depending on the problem, treatment may be possible at that visit, may require another appointment or may involve referral when specialist care is more appropriate.

Common questions

Common questions about dental emergencies.

What counts as a dental emergency?+

Significant or worsening tooth pain, swelling, dental trauma, a broken tooth and other sudden dental problems may require prompt assessment. If you're unsure how urgent your problem is, call us and tell us what you're experiencing.

Can I get a same-day emergency dental appointment?+

Often, yes. We make room in our schedule for urgent dental problems and will see you as promptly as we can, often the same day.

Can I walk in without an appointment?+

Yes, when our team has availability. We highly recommend calling ahead, though, so we can coordinate with your dentist’s schedule that day and see you as promptly as we can.

Can I get emergency dental care in the evening or on a weekend?+

You’re covered. Evenings and weekends, our trusted partner, Dental Emergency Services, two blocks north of our office at 1650 Yonge Street, takes care of urgent dental problems and sends us a report so we can continue your care. Their 24-hour line is 416-485-7121.

Can you see me if I'm not already a patient?+

Yes. Dr. Michael Nightingale and Dr. Ali Lubelsky are welcoming new patients. Call the office and let us know that you have an urgent dental concern.

What should I do if I have facial swelling?+

Dental or facial swelling should be taken seriously. Call us promptly for guidance. Difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing or extensive swelling, or other signs of a medical emergency require urgent medical assessment.

What should I do if I break a tooth?+

Call us and describe what happened, whether the tooth is painful and how much of the tooth appears to be affected. The appropriate next step depends on the extent of the damage and the condition of the tooth.

Will you fix the problem at the emergency appointment?+

Sometimes treatment can be provided during the emergency visit, but not every problem can or should be definitively treated immediately. The first priority is to assess the problem and determine the appropriate next step.

I'm anxious about coming in. Do you offer nitrous oxide?+

Yes. We understand that an unexpected dental problem can feel especially stressful, particularly if you haven't been to the dentist in a while. Nitrous oxide may be available for appropriate patients to help make dental treatment more comfortable. Let us know when you call if you're feeling anxious about the visit, and we can discuss whether it may be appropriate for you.
