Our approach to prevention

Prevention starts with paying attention.

Regular examinations and cleanings help us understand your oral health and recognize changes early. At Chandler & Nightingale Dental, we take the time to explain what we're seeing, what needs attention and what can simply be monitored.

The right care, at the right time.

Regular dental care

Exams and cleanings work together.

A professional cleaning and a dental examination serve different purposes. Hygiene appointments focus on removing plaque and tartar and maintaining gum health, while dental examinations allow your dentist to assess your teeth, gums and oral tissues and identify changes that may need attention.

They are often part of the same ongoing-care plan, but how frequently you need each depends on your individual oral health.

Prevention over time

We get to know what's normal for you.

Seeing you regularly gives us context. We can compare what we see today with previous examinations and X-rays, understand how your teeth and gums are changing, and keep an eye on areas that may not need treatment yet.

Our approach is to protect what's healthy, address problems when they need attention and avoid treatment simply for the sake of treatment. Your hygiene and dental visits work together to help us care for your oral health over time.

Common questions

How often should I have a dental cleaning?+

The right interval depends on your oral health. Some patients do well with routine cleaning intervals, while others benefit from more frequent visits because of gum health, tartar buildup or other factors. We recommend a schedule based on what we see clinically rather than using the same interval for everyone.

What happens during a dental exam?+

A dental exam allows us to assess your teeth, gums, bite and other oral tissues and look for changes that may need attention. Depending on your needs and when they were last taken, X-rays may also be recommended. We'll explain what we see and discuss whether anything needs treatment, monitoring or preventive care.

Why do my gums bleed when I brush or floss?+

Bleeding gums are often a sign of inflammation and shouldn't simply be ignored. Plaque buildup and gum disease are common causes, although there can be others. An examination and assessment of your gum health can help determine what is happening and what care may be appropriate.

What can help sensitive teeth?+

Tooth sensitivity can have several causes, including exposed root surfaces, enamel wear, cavities, cracks or other dental problems. What helps depends on the cause, so persistent or new sensitivity is worth assessing rather than simply assuming you need a sensitivity toothpaste.

Do you offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas)?+

Yes. Nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") is available during treatment, when appropriate, to help patients who feel anxious feel more relaxed. We also use it quite often for children, to help them feel at ease at the dentist. If you think it might help, let us know when you arrange your appointment. We'll talk through whether it's a good option and allow time for any questions.
