Dental Exams

At Yonge & St. Clair.

Regular dental exams help us monitor your teeth, gums and oral tissues, identify changes early and decide when something needs treatment, preventive care or simply continued observation.

Regular dental care

A closer look at your oral health.

A dental exam is an opportunity to look beyond how your teeth feel today. At Chandler & Nightingale Dental, we assess your teeth, gums and other oral tissues, review changes and consider what we're seeing in the context of your previous dental care.

Not every finding requires treatment. Sometimes the right approach is prevention, sometimes treatment is appropriate, and sometimes an area simply needs to be monitored over time.

What we look for

What does your dentist check during an exam?

Your teeth

We look for cavities, cracks, wear, failing restorations and other changes that may need attention.

Your gums

We assess the health of the tissues supporting your teeth and look for signs of inflammation or gum disease.

Existing dental work

Fillings, crowns, bridges and other restorations are checked for changes or signs that they may need attention.

Your bite and jaw

When appropriate, we consider your bite, jaw function and signs of clenching or grinding.

Your oral tissues

We examine the soft tissues of the mouth and look for changes that may warrant monitoring or further assessment.

Changes over time

Previous examinations and dental X-rays can provide useful context for understanding whether something is new, stable or changing.

Common questions

Common questions about dental exams.

How often should I have a dental exam?+

The right interval depends on your oral health, dental history and individual needs. Some patients need to be examined more frequently than others. We recommend an appropriate schedule based on your clinical circumstances rather than assuming the same interval is right for everyone.

Do I need X-rays at every dental exam?+

No. Dental X-rays are recommended when they are clinically useful, not automatically at every examination. Whether you need them depends on factors such as your age, oral health, dental history, symptoms, previous X-rays and what we see during your examination.

Is a dental exam the same as a dental cleaning?+

No. A dental exam is performed by a dentist to assess your oral health and identify changes that may need attention or monitoring. A dental cleaning focuses on removing plaque and tartar and maintaining the health of your teeth and gums. Both can be part of your ongoing preventive care, but they serve different purposes.

What if I haven't been to the dentist in several years?+

You can start with an assessment of where things are now. We'll review your dental and medical history, examine your oral health and explain what we find. If treatment or additional hygiene care is recommended, we'll discuss the priorities and next steps with you.

Can a dentist tell if I have a cavity during an exam?+

Many cavities can be identified during a clinical examination, while others may be easier to detect with dental X-rays. If we find an area of concern, we'll explain what we're seeing and whether it needs treatment or monitoring.

What happens if you find something during my exam?+

We'll show you what we've found, explain what it means and discuss the available options. Some findings need treatment, some benefit from preventive changes, and others can simply be monitored. If another clinician's expertise would be more appropriate, we'll help coordinate a referral.
